Understanding Norwegian Taxes

What is National Insurance (Trygdeavgift)?
National Insurance is Norway's social security system. The 7.6% contribution covers your pension, healthcare, unemployment benefits, sick leave, parental leave, and other social protections.
What is Progressive Tax (Trinnsskatt)?
This is a bracket-based tax where different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
What is Standard Deduction (Minstefradrag)?
An automatic deduction covering work-related expenses like commuting, tools, and professional costs. It's 46% of your salary with a maximum of 95,700 NOK.
What is Personal Allowance (Personsfradrag)?
A basic tax-free allowance that everyone gets to ensure a minimum income level before taxes apply. It's a flat 114,540 NOK for all taxpayers, reducing your taxable income automatically.
